The Minneapolis Police Department Community Crime Prevention/SAFE unit specializes in helping citizens and neighborhoods prevent crime. Police specialists develop programs such as Neighborhood Problem Solving, which addresses issues affecting the quality of life in a neighborhood. Problems may include loud parties, drug dealing, run-down properties, etc. Residents and district teams work together to develop strategies and solutions. CCP/SAFE has a wealth of material on its web pages, including several flyers in its library of helpful safety and security tips:

Imagine 30,000 Minneapolis residents taking to the streets to join
32,000,000 other people across the country to celebrate neighborliness,
safety and community. That’s what will happen on National Night Out (NNO),
August 6. This year NNO will be 19 years old and it’s expected that 1800
Minneapolis block clubs will host more than 800 block parties. Some will be
as simple as neighbors sharing lemonade while others will have music,
dancing, pot-lucks, games, and other events.

"Get Out; Get Acquainted is this year's National Night Out theme and it's an invitation to get to know your neighbors." said Lisa Klaphake, Minneapolis NNO coordinator. She added, "Neighbors who know each other, and who work together are the most effective crime prevention tool the city has."

Minneapolis National Night Out Ranked #1 in Nation

The Minneapolis National Night Out (NNO) effort has been voted the best in the country for the year 2001 by The National Association of Town Watch (NATW), the national coordinators of NNO. Minneapolis distinguished itself from the 9,700 communities participating, among them more than 50 other cities with populations over 300,000. This is the second time in five years that Minneapolis has received the #1 honor.

Every year, NNO is held on the first Tuesday in August. Millions of neighbors across the country get together for parties and other events on their blocks to celebrate National Night Out, which is the largest crime prevention/community-building event in the world.

In 2001 Minneapolis neighborhoods came out in force, blocking-off 536 city streets and holding 825 block party events enjoyed by 35,234 people (9.2% of the city's population).

According to NATW executive director Matt Peskin, the founder of NNO, "No other city in the country comes close to the consistently high quality effort that Minneapolis puts together. In each of National Night Out's 18 years, Minneapolis has been ranked in the top ten. In the last five years it has been ranked #1 twice and #2 the other 3 years. It can't get much better than that."

The National Association of Town watch uses a number of criteria when rating the success of a community's National Night Out effort. Some of the criteria are the quality and size of the Overall Campaign, Neighborhood Participation, Law Enforcement Involvement, Media and Promotional Campaign, Special Events, and Post-Project Report.

NNO 2001 sponsors were; KFAI Radio, The Minneapolis Foundation, The Minnesota Twins, Reliant Energy - Minnegasco and Wells Fargo. Over a hundred other businesses and community organizations provided additional supports.

Minneapolis National Night Out is coordinated by Community Crime Prevention/SAFE (CCP/SAFE) a unit of the Minneapolis Police Department and is a collaborative effort that is actively embraced by many parts of the community.

National Night Out 2005 will be held August 2.

The best defense against crime is neighbors knowing each other!
