The 2008 Treasure Hunt

Background on the 2008 clues and location:

Treasure Hunt committee member Margaret Craig points to the location of the rabbit, just off the corner of 59th street and 14th avenue, inside Edward C. Solomon Park.

2008 Treasure Hunt Clues and Comments:

1. Corners in our neighborhood are everywhere
We'll narrow them down, just to be fair.
When you're at the right one, gaze all around
Under 40 paces the rabbit's to be found.
This hunt's theme was corners.
2. Benches, playgrounds, corners galore
But don't fret yet, we'll tell you more.
Thousands, yes, but unfurl your brow
Because it's a streetcorner, we're telling you now.
Self-explanatory: a street corner.
3. Let's try to get that number low:
Streets in all four directions do not go.
Ten divided by two, that number's fine
Since it's one of the numbers on a nearby sign.
The rabbit is always on public land, so it's a corner without four streets. One of them has a five in the street sign or a bus sign. Still a very broad clue.
4. Yes, there's more we want to say
You'll see a box not far away.
And colors red and white do appear
On a sign you'll see that's fairly near.
This narrows it down quite a bit, although there are at least three corners we found with these characteristics.
5. We'll describe another corner that you can see
From the area of the rabbit, diagonally.
Its street sign has the number five
And the four cardinal directions you cannot drive.
You'll also see a barrel there,
For trash, so that our parks stay fair.
We saw only two corners that matched this description: the corner near the rabbit, and the corner at 57th and Chicago, diagonal from 56th and Portland, which has all the characteristics of the previous clues.
6. By now you may be getting near
Maybe walked past it, but still no cheer.
Don't give up. It's hard to see
But when you find it, you'll shout with glee.
Are you sure you're at the corner that's right?
Clue five's corner can shed some light.
There's a little hill a ways away,
A bit like a berm you could probably say.
Still only two corners like this that we knew of. This clue could confirm the correct corner was either 59th and 14th or 56th and Portland. We saw one person pacing off in Solomon Park on Monday, but at the wrong corner. We saw a few people pacing off at Todd Park, at both corners of interest.
7. If you're at that corner (clue 5) and ready to go,
Walk along that faraway fence nice and slow.
Walking easterly, you're heading towards the rabbit
So keep a sharp eye and you might just nab it.
At the clue 5 corner (58th and 13th), the faraway fence along 59th is the correct fence. At Todd, the faraway fence was the baseball diamond fence.
8. You've probably guessed the rabbit's in a park,
Our newest, by the way, just on a lark.
That southern fence goes along a short street,
You're very close, and winning will be such a treat.
Announces that it is Edward C. Solomon Park, the neighborhood's newest.
9. While sitting on the bench, just turn your head,
to see the circle about which you've already read.
Find the center, and on the path stay southerly,
Then around to the back of that big green tree.
The specific location.

We hope everyone enjoyed participating in the treasure hunt. Please join us again next year.
